Getaway to San Luis Obispo

A couple weeks ago, over spring break, we took a trip up the coast to San Luis Obispo. The drive up the coast is just long enough to feel like you are getting away, but not so long that you get restless.

The hills were covered in wildflowers and the skies were clear blue. It was a great afternoon, and we all found the drive fun and relaxing. Since we met at Cal Poly SLO, we were used to making the drive, but taking it for vacation…so much better!

There are a few must-stops for us when we are in SLO, one being Del Monte Cafe. Good food, great atmosphere….just a nice place to have breakfast together and prepare for the day….Another one is Montana de Oro state park. The drive takes us just out of town, through fields and past the hiker’s paradise, Bishop’s Peak. Past the hills, through Los Osos, you come to the dunes and the ocean….

The beach here is stunning, the wind that day was out of this world, the flowers were in bloom….We got to walk on the sand, play with driftwood and see snowy plover nesting grounds- all good things!!! The wonder of creation.

After a day at the beach, we need some good eats!! Back to SLO for Farmer’s Market and bbq. We also took in all the new changes around the town- including a nice vintage candy shop (Dillan was happy!) and Pete’s Coffee (I was happy)….lots more fancy stores and restaurants. And, pleasantly, a good amount of restoration of some of the old hotel facades….

On the way home, we stopped by Ojai for the first time. I know so many people who love it and enjoy the time that they spend there, so we were glad to get a chance to see it for ourselves. The vibe there is laid back, artistic and eclectic. Homemade ice cream was consumed, roasted coffee beans were purchased and the gas tank was filled and we were back on the road….we will definitely be back there again.

For such a short trip, we had a really relaxing and wonderful time together. We pushed the trip off for so long that it was becoming a joke- I am so glad that we took the time to do this again (it is our 4th trip with Dilly) and we did talk about how great it would be if he went to college there and we could come to visit him….Boy, we are turing into old folks! All in all, it was a blessing to be able to go- a very sweet time!
